1912 Nicaragua Cordoba

Year: 1912

Country: Nicaragua

Denomination: Cordoba

Weight: 25 grams

Mintage: 35,000

Grade: NGC AU50

KM # 16

Comments: The obverse of this coin features Francisco Hernández de Córdoba the reputed founder of Nicaragua. The reverse features a very popular design from the Central American Republic 8 Reales coins of the sun peeking over mountains.  This was one of a group of coins that I recently sent off to NGC for grading.  I expected an XF grade but was surprised that it came back as AU50.

I collect silver crownsized coins too. Most of them before 1945. The oldest is a Philipsdaalder from the Nijmegen mint in Holland from 1557. We share a lot of the same coins but this Nicaraguan one is still missing.. Nice coin. I love the 19the century S-American coins. Lots of history.

At last! This coin is in my collection too. Took me some time to find a decent one for a good price. They're selling for more than catalogue value nowadays.
